It's been reported in Variety that a remake is in the works, with Reese to play the starring role of Eve Peabody. It's also been said that Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine) will write the screenplay.
*sigh* Are they so out of original ideas that they have to remake movies that are perfect to begin with?
I don't know how I feel about this. One one hand, remakes of movies of this good rarely work out. On the other hand, anything that generates interest in this classic is a good thing; maybe we will finally get it on DVD. Witherspoon is a talented comedienne and at least they tried to hire a screenwriter with some wit, although no one can compare with Billy Wilder.
probably won't see the remake, but will buy the tie-in DVD the day it hits the streets!
I agree: I think I would almost* be willing to put up with a remake if only the money-grubbers come out with a good DVD transfer of the original.
I'm a big fan of Swing Time and Midnight was shown with it as the other half of a double bill. I must say that Midnight really grew on me after multiple viewings.
Best lines:
Jacques [gazing lovingly at the "Baroness"]: "Isn't she wonderful?"
No Please! So many remakes of classics are either just awful or can't even hold a candle to the original. I tell anyone who'll listen to watch the classic first.
It'll be interesting to see what they keep and what they change. The plot does seem like it would work in 2009, but I agree with the other posts, why remake it? Hopefully this will get people to watch the original.
I wonder if this is still happening. I'm usually against remakes of great movies. I think, if you're gonna remake a movie why not remake one that was badly done and can be easily improved upon. Plus, I dislike 95% of current comedies. But for whatever reason, I'm not totally against this. I feel like if there's a chance that it could be good, well, I haven't seen a good, new romantic comedy in a long time.
Also, in the article he said-
"[the film has] long been one of my favorite films, and it is easily one of the best comedies of the '30's. Being given the chance to update the film with Reese in the lead is simply a dream come true."
If it's really one of his favorite films, then, number one, it means he he's in the same boat as us in liking that style of humour, and number two, he'll work harder to keep it from ruining the original.
Yes, I agree 100%, a high percentage don't have any kind of ideas, much less original ones. I would not be surprised if they cast a Brad Pitt as Mr. Czerny and Harrison Ford in John Barrymore's role with Julia Roberts as his wife.
I don't have anything against Pitt, Ford or Roberts, it's just that they don't have the class for outstanding comedy.
