Horses and wagon

The trivia section says that 2 horses were killed when a wagon went over a 75 foot cliff. I just watched the movie and one horse and no wagon went over a cliff and was filmed with 2 different cameras to look like 2 different falls.

Might be refering to Dark Command with John Wayne

"•In the 1939 film Jesse James the horse that jumped off the cliff really did die, after this the American Humane Association for animal rights was founded."

Don't watch this movie if you care about animals.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)

reply

Yeah! That'll learn 'em! The animals will all appreciate someone not viewing a 70-year old movie.

That cliff dive was a spectacular stunt. But I'd like to know the source for the claim that the horse died. (I'll go back and read the trivia section.)
At the beginning of the shot, the trajectory seems like the horse slid down a hidden chute belly-up and tail-end first. The stuntman followed behind, holding onto the reins. The horse pivoted mid-air to land in the water feet first. The stuntman tumbled head over heels and lands on his belly -- we might be concerned for HIS health, too.

There were a number of other impressive horse stunts. A couple times horses fall at full gallop when the lawmen "shoot" them. And it was wild riding when Frank and Jesse make their desperate escape from Northfield by crashing through a storefront window and riding through the building.

It can't be classified as a "spectacular stunt" if the horse in question was killed. Throwing a horse off a cliff and capturing it on film takes approximatley zero skill, and zero heart.

I missed the first hour of this film but saw one scene in which a horse fell suddenly on his face, which was undoubtedly a trip-fall using a wire. I wonder if that horse had to be destroyed. Disgusting.

Animals were often mistreated in films back then and this film spurred the Humane Society to protect animals in films.

What we have here is failure to communicate!
