Wow, Cary Grant is gorgeous! He is etherally beautiful in the hotel sick-bed scene - He speaks so gently and the camera comes in for a close-up of his face and those lovely deep brown eyes...Breathtaking!
‘Six inches is perfectly adequate; more is vulgar!' (Prime of Miss Jean Brodie Re: An open window).
Yes, I love him in everything I've seen him in, and he certainly had chemistry with just about everyone, but I found him extra-gorgeous and wonderful in this movie. He was so handsome and funny (not funny in this movie, but often) that I think he was underrated, but he was so talented along with his great looks.
For a different twist, I loved him in 'Suspician' with Joan Fontaine. He is funny and mysterious, all in one character, in that film. And, it goes without saying, he's quite scrumptious looking in it as well.

I really think Grant is what elevates this above being what they used to be called just a "woman's picture". Most other leading men would merely have served as props- something for the women to fight over. His performance, with the help of Richard Sherman's screenplay, bring the character to life and make the film really work. As for his looks- Cary Grant is one of the very few people of whom it can be said that it is impossible to truly judge how handsome he really is as he has become the standard by which we measure looks. Personally, I never get tired of looking at him- and I'm a guy!
I actually think Cary was far more handsome and appealing when he got older (not he was shabby in this film... far from it!) He was absolutely magnificent looking in North By Northwest, and that was a full 20 years after this flick. He aged incredibly well.
My friends and I had a discussion the other day-who is the modern day Cary Grant? The consensus, there isn't one. Hanks-not handsome enough. Clooney-not funny enough. Jude Law, Hugh Grant-no and no. Pitt, Gosling, Affleck, Bale, Depp, Damon, McConaughey-all no. Cruise-Hell NO. Cary Grant is one of a kind and I think I like it that way.
p.s. The close-ups in this movie show his less than perfect teeth. He lost a front tooth when young, and the dentist just squeezed the rest together to close the gap, essentially placing one lone central incisor in the middle. (top teeth)
Only Americans seem to be obsessed with dental alignment. To me, slightly less-than-perfect is actually more attractive. Everyone will disagree, but I'll try not to lose any sleep over it.
All that being said, yes, Grant is one of the most handsome men of all film history, and his face is enhanced by his terrific charisma.
