shareI don't know, but when I did a search to get to this page, a 2005 version popped up. It had no info though.

To remake this movie, they would need to disregard political correctness and stick to the story. I remember the latest remake of four feathers and what a POS it was. You're probably right, leave well enough alone.
shareI thought about this tonight actually and a remake done right would be a really big hit. For the Grant role you gotta have Johnny Depp, it's the exact sort of oddball comedic role he would excel at doing. The Fairbanks role is no big problem, just some British pretty boy type (Jude Law, Orlando Bloom, etc.). The toughest role is the McLaglen role, that one I am not real sure who should be cast.
This is more escapist and fun than The Four Feathers, which really IS a stiff upper lip, dated English adventure (the 1939 Feathers is great though). It was always fairly clear that the villains in Gunga Din are certainly not representative of India as a whole, handle it similar to the way Temple of Doom did and it will be fine.
The film WAS remade, after a fashion, as SERGEANTS 3 (1962) and featured the Rat Pack. Sinatra, Lawford, & Martin in the Grant, Mclaglen, Fairbanks roles, with Joey Bishop in the Robert Coote part and Sammy Davis in the equivalent of Gunga Din. The U.S. Cavalry substituted for the British Army and so forth. After years of being unavailable, SERGEANTS is finally on DVD.
shareI really don't see how they could remake this movie and keep its integrity intact. They'd probably add some ridiculous CGI elephant chase scene and completely shame the original. I feel like some movies are too perfect to be remade and this is one of them.
