Book or Movie?
Despite the significant time investment involved I'm going with the book.
shareI liked them both, but the book has characters that are (of necessity; it is a long book), left out: Scarlett has 3 children, one by each of her three husbands: Wade Hampton by Charles Hamilton, Ella Lorena by Frank Kennedy, and Eugenie Victoria 'Bonnie Blue' by Rhett Butler. In the film only Bonnie appears.
Pork, the butler at Tara, has a wife, Dilcey, a calm common sense presence, who does not appear in the movie. Prissy, the girl who accompanies Scarlett and the pregnant Melanie back to Tara is their daughter. Will Benteen, the crippled Rebel soldier who is taken in, nursed back to health and who stays on to help work Tara, and eventually marries Suellen O'Hara. is also omitted.
There are others, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
Oh my God, now I've got to get a copy and read it. Thanks (I think!)
shareOh, the book!
Long and full of things that will offend the delicate, but it's a gripping read and has much more depth and feeling than the movie. Sure, the movie is one of the best adaptations of a book of all time, but a film can never capture the depth and nuance of a good book.
The book. And if you're able to find a copy, I highly recommend reading Lost Laysen (also written by Margaret Mitchell) as well.
shareThe book - well worth the effort. Harder to be sympathetic to Scarlett because she is so retched to her other children. Bonny is the only one she loved. The added characters, left out of the movie, are wonderful too.
