Will Be On Svengoolie on 10/17/2015

The Cat and the Canary will be on Svengoolie on MeTV on 10/17/2015 at 9PM Central Time. 

Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard are great in this one. I hope Sven shows The Ghost Breakers some time. That is the other spooky haunted house movie they made together, 

I see on Paulette Goddard's imdb bio page that she was paid $85,000 to make this movie. 

Well jamesbwill I guess we can only hope it will be a good and scary one with actors Vincent Price or Peter Cushing maybe both ( my wishlist thought here   )  ?
Whatever is shown on Sven we know it will be a fun yet festive time as always .   

What film would you like to see on Sven Halloween night ?  

Horror of Dracula (1958) with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing might be a very good choice for a scary Halloween. 

Excellent choice jamesbwill something also from the Hammer Films Collection

It will be Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff.

The original classic. A good choice for Halloween night.

For anyone interested, the 2004 two-part miniseries Frankenstein, starring Luke Goss, Alec Newman, Julie Delpy and William Hurt, will be airing on the Multiplex Movie Channel on 11/3/15, repeated on 11/5; and on the Encore Suspense channel on 11/10 and 11/11.

That version is widely regarded as being most faithful to the Mary Shelley novel.

This one looks witty. Do you think my ten-year-old son might enjoy it? A child that age? He likes the Twilight Zone episodes like Little Girl Lost and The Bewitchin' Pool. I think it's the idea of the portals that pique his interest.

In any case, he doesn't scare easily from movies, either. I'm wondering if you could start posting whether or not the films Sven shows are appropriate for a ten (and a half)-year-old or what age might enjoy the weekly films, if you've seen then already.

He and my husband have what my son now refers to as their "Man Shows" like Dual Survivor. Lol. I'm under strict orders not too delete their Man Shows. I was thinking that since I often DVR these films and watch later that I could start watching them on Sundsy nights earlier in the evening with my son. (I don't want him up to midnight on any night disrupting his sleep schedule, which is hard enough to maintain as it is.) It could be our "thing."

I hope Sven shows something spooky with anticipation for Halloween. I'm just happy ABC is showing Its the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown on the 20th instead of Halloween night when we go trick or treating.

That's so great Sitcom_Sally that your 10 year old son also enjoys TZ  
( I agree " The Bewitchin' Pool " and " Little Girl Lost " were excellent episodes as well ! your son has great taste in episodes too !  ) .

I actually discovered this show when I was 12 years old from a 12 hour unedited marathon on a local station a long time ago and " Miniature " became my #1. fave of all - " The After Hours " was my second fave   .

Although I haven't seen this film yet I always did like Bob Hope as a child  .

I agree with jamesbwill ( and even from the movie trailer I posted here too ) it doesn't appear to be anything too traumatic in this film that would scare a 10 year old out of watching it .
It actually looks like a really fun film especially with Bob Hope in it too   .

It also appears that most of Sven's films are family friendly unless he says there are certain scenes that may be too scary for some viewers but it seems that's not very often with these films .

I think.youre right about them being pretty family friendly. I know he won't like all of them at this age, but I hope this can be one of out "things." When we watch Dracula he can wear his tshirt from the area a friend whose mother is Romanian brought back to him. Theme nights, so to speak, are fun.

My husbands nephew and niece watch this Sven show also and they are ages 9 and 7 - they love it ! 

I agree Sitcom_Sally this is a fun show to watch on a Saturday night and for all ages who love the classics as we all do here as well   .

Does your son have an " Official Svengoolie T-Shirt " for this show too ? 

Theme night just too much fun it's like a second Halloween   .

reply

No, he's hasn't watched Svengoolie enough to have a shirt, yet. If he gets into it I'll get him one. He doesn't like the lead-is that relate to the following segments. I was pleased he caught onto that himself.

He didn't make it through my DVR'd version of It Came From Outerspace. There's a lot of driving in that film, which I can understand can be boring to a child. (He fell asleep.) Also, when the one-eyed alien first jumps out it did scare him, as did the lead character saying something like, "They're alive out there." What I consider to be scarier doesn't bother him, but I think this speaks to Hitchcock's theory that suspense is scarier than in-your-face horror.

I don't know why my post reads that my son "doesn't like the lead-in..." because he did. That's why I said I was glad he caught onto those himself. Our autocorrect (among other things) has been all messed up since we updated our phones.

I think this movie is perfect for that age, because the one-liners by Bob Hope lightens the mood and makes the movie almost like a parody rather than a genuine horror flick. It's on the campy side, so I don't think it's likely to give any kid nightmares. There are some scenes involving the old ladies which are obviously played for laughs, so the movie doesn't take itself too seriously. I'm not finished watching it yet, but from what I've seen so far, its overall mood is similar to a Scooby Doo cartoon.

Frankenstein will be shown on Halloween night on METV.

Thanks for posting, jamesbwill. I replied to ms_zanadu because I know her from the Twilight Zone board. But, same question applies to you about appropriateness for children. And by that I mean is it too scary or vulgar or even boring for a child that age. I don't mind some foul language in films he sees, nor drinking, and those things some post about films in the parents guide pages of a film. Really, I want to know if it would interest a child that age and whether or not there are moments when a parent would be thinking, "Well, that was awkward."

You are quite welcome, Sally. 

I watched The Cat and the Canary as a 10 or 12 year and I think it's perfectly all right for kids. I don't think there is anything in it that could be a problem. Kids today can probably still appreciate the humor of the movie and not be scared by it.

That's what I was thinking. As long as it's not something like Hostel or The Exorcisf I don't think he would get too spooked. I would like to know for these films if they have scenes I might have to explain on-the-spot like rape or incest. There was one recently about the boy who turned into a werewolf after his mother had been raped by someone. However, that scene was more implied so I think something like that would go over his head.

Thanks for the heads up. Like Ms-Z, I haven't seen this. I grew up watching Hope do his TV specials. I always think of him as being a comedian. This should be an entertaining movie.

There's plenty of time for Sven to fill as well. I hope everyone enjoys the show. It's going to be a good night for some hot apple cider and popcorn for us. There's going to be frost  on the pumpkin 🎃 !

Is that the same mansion that was used in The Alligator People? That building exterior looks familiar.

Saw it. He had some good bits. Bob Hope imho added very little though I can see why Sven would love him -- guy has more corny jokes than Bob Hope!
