When the lights first go out, after the reading of the will, Lu the housekeeper disappears. Later, when she re-appears, she doesn't offer an explanation, and nobody bothers to ask her where she went !

Do you mean the scene where Miss Lu is on the stairs, the lights go out, and then when they go back on, there's a black cat in her place? Lu had simply run into another room (you—and the characters wondering what had happened as well—can hear her yelling at someone).
