The Sycamores get charged with making fireworks without a license and disturbing the peace. Martin has to pay a fine of $100, Anthony Kirby insists on paying it, but Martin refuses, and a woman in the court says "No you don't! Grandpa don't need your money! We'll pay the fine!" and everybody in the courtroom is shelling out money until they get enough. The court wants to know why the Kirbys were over there, Martin says because Anthony was talking about selling his house. Alice gets fed up and screams that the real reason they were there was to see if her family was good enough for the Kirbys, but in fact the Kirbys aren't good enough for the Sycamores. Alice runs out, saying to the Kirbys "The next time you plan to go slumming, stay away from our neighborhood!"
Alice runs away and she doesn't plan to come back, meanwhile business goes on with the Kirbys, Ramsey comes up to the building and he tells Anthony that his whole life he hasn't lost a thing in business but he's had nothing to be happy for either, and that's what'll become of Anthony too. Since Alice won't come home, Martin sells the house and they're going to go move near Alice. A short while later, Ramsey is found in the morgue, heart failure, and Anthony realizes Martin was right all along, so he starts going to a business meeting, but then he tells the elevator man "take me down!"
The whole neighborhood is in arms about the Sycamores moving, but they're still helping them to move. Tony wants to see Alice but her family won't tell him where he is, although Martin says there's a trunk upstairs that's going to her. At that time Alice steps in, Tony tries to talk to her but she's not hearing it, she runs upstairs to her room and locks him out. Anthony comes in and he tells Martin that he's willing to pay a fortune for what he and his family have, Martin tells him that's his problem, that he measures everything by money. Martin then reminds Anthony that he has the harmonica, and they both start playing Polly Wolly Doodle and the neighbors stop moving the furniture and they start dancing.
Then the Kirbys and the Sycamores are at dinner and Martin says: Well, sir, here we are again. We've had quite a time of it lately, but it seems that the worst of it is over. Course, the fireworks all blew up, but we can't very well blame that on you. Anyway, everything's turned out fine, as it usually does. Alice is going to marry Tony; Mr. Kirby, who's turned out to be a very good egg, sold us back our house - he'll probably forget all about big deals for a while. Nobody on our block has to move; and, with the right handling, I think we can even thaw out Mrs. Kirby here. We've all got our health; as far as anything else is concerned, we still leave that up to you. Thank you."
