I notice the cook mentions the word 'relief' a few times during the movie. 'no mamm, i'm on relief'....'do they have relief there?'

check this out :-) http://www.cogsci.princeton.edu/cgi-bin/webwn2.0?stage=1&word=relief:

aid for the aged or indigent or handicapped; "he has been on relief for many years"

Think welfare, but back when America *wanted* to take care of those less fortunate, as opposed to today, when we just want them to disappear.

Like Orpheum-3 said, it's like welfare.

Wow. That's a harsh reply. A legitimate question was asked. Wouldn’t "Relief is what they called welfare back then" suffice as an answer? Why the extra part calling the person a "moron" and "*beep* stupid"? I don't see anything in the original question calling for these strong words.

Although, I do wonder why red_cloak assumes relief is some type of alcoholic beverage or drug. Curious. Almost makes me wonder if it's a racial thing...

By the way, welfare is one word, not two. You moron. God, you are *beep* stupid.

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

Some people still call it Relief today. Yes, it was welfare after the stock market crash. Social Security was part of this which began in 1935.
