Why did Penny write plays?

Do you think it's because this was originally a play itself that Penny wrote plays? I could never figure out why she wrote plays instead of novels because plays are a lot more difficult to write, at least from what I've read it would seem so.

Penny writes plays because, according to Alice, who explains it to Tony, someone accidentally delivered a typewriter by mistake. Penny, who was a kid when that happened, got curious, and learned how to compose plays.

She wasn't quite a kid though at the time because Alice says it was 8 years ago, 8 years ago if we want to follow the chronological order that is presented in the original play, Alice would've been about 14 at the time so Penny would've been in her late 30s or somewhere in her 40s I think.

In the original play she wrote plays as well. So it's not just the movie.
