Ann Miller

Saw the first 45 minutes of the movie last night and wasn't impressed--I prefer the play, but that's a topic for a different board.

On topic, Miller's part in this film is of Essie, the wanna-be dancer who, despite her constant dancing, never improves (at least, that's so of the character in the play).

Meanwhile, Miller really IS a dancer, and since she made a fortune doin' it, couldn't really fake being bad at it. A poor casting choice IMHO--the part called for someone clumsier.

So her dancing didn't improve over a couple of days...she mainly did it for fun...besides, Ann Miller was only 15 at the time, passing herself off as 18 just so she could be in movies, and I think she did an astonishing job...I absolutely loved her in it.

I thought she was adorable in the role.

It's an interesting psychological phenomenon.

I must say I loved Ann Miller in the role- herself and Lionel Barrymore (who should have gotten a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role) are the two main reasons why I would watch the film again!

Her and Penny were my favorite characters. I thought they were played brilliantly by Spring Byington and Ann Miller, respectively.
