Did I miss something? Towards the climax on the train, when the soldier comes on board to tell them to get off, and Gilbert knocks him out with the chair, does Gilbert remark "I went to Cambridge"? I don't get it.
shareIt's because the soldier has just said he went to Oxford. There is a big traditional rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge. Gilbert's jokingly saying he knocked the soldier out because they went to rival universities (as opposed to the real reason, needing to knock him out because he was with the people trying to murder Mrs Froy). It's a very British joke.
