Stanwyck Should Have Won the Oscar

She really should have won the Oscar for this one. I think she was generally disappointed about this one. Her performance is outstanding in this. One of the best performances of any actress in my honest opinion. She was the first to show her emotions through her eyes and not through face contorsions and broad moves. She new that major displays were for the stage and for film it must be more subtle.

Luise Rainer won this year for "The Good Earth" and I don't want to underestimate her performance, but I still think Barbara Stanwyck should have won.

I agree.

A strong year, tough competition, besides Ms. Rainer, Gaynor and Garbo are all great. Irene Dunne maybe a little weak in the race. Whatever, it's just Oscar.

reply

I don't think anyone was any better that yr than Barbara was.

I have to agree, Barbara Stanwyck was never more deserving of Oscar than she was for Stella Dallas.

There have been many years with several qualified performances where I had wished another had won but I cannot argue that the winner was undeserving (except in 2010!). I really enjoyed Stanwyck in this but I can't knock Luise Rainer in The Good Earth. In the early days, the studio heads picked the winners and used getting or not getting a nomination as a control tool over their contract actors.
