Did Stanwyck deserve the Oscar?

She herself was really upset that she didn't win because "I really poured my blood into it". Was Luise Rainer's performance better, equal or less? Would like to hear your opinions. This film is dated to be sure, but because of Barbara, it's unforgettable....

Yes she did deserve the Oscar for this performance or even Sorry Wrong Number. I still can't believe Stanwyck never won an Oscar. An incredible actress who could act anything.

Luise Rainer won the year before, Barbara was robbed.

She most certainly deserved the Oscar. I have seen all five performances of the nominees that year. Louise Rainer and Greta Garbo's performances were great, but very one note. Irene Dunne was wonderful too but the comedy was not the equal of Stanwyck that year. Janet Gaynor was fantastic in "A Star is Born" but Fredric March stole the movie from her. Stanwyck showed us a multi layered and multi faceted characterization to where one minute you wanted to strangle Stella, then the next minute you were rooting for her! It takes an exceptional actress to make one feel that way!

One reason she may have not is because Academy voters may have felt that Marie Dressler already won an award for a very similar "ultimate sacrifice" story in Min & Bill.

Well Rainer won for The Good Earth and she played a tragic, doormat wife. She also won the previous year for playing a tragic, divorced wife.
