why can't filmmakers
make films like this anymore. Pure clean fun, with a great storyline (okay maybe lifted from ghost train) but you know what I mean..

I am with you on that. superb, as was "ask a policeman" I personally prefer the will hay films with moore marriot and graham moffat.
fave bit of "porter" is when he throws arbottle's pipe into gladstone's firebox.

Sadly I have a problem with Ask A Policeman in that I saw that awful "Boys in Blue" remake before the original....shudder...as well as the fact that the car/van chase was just too long. Ask A Policeman scores 8/10 (oh yes, and Will Hay stares straight at the camera as they wade through the flooded cave, and it seems he ad-libbed "oh, theres a hole here" as he glares at the camera and director...) whereas Oh Mr Porter is perfect.

The film you`re thinking of (with the bagpipes behind the wall) was THE GHOST OF ST. MICHAELS. I wish they`d release all of Will Hay`s films on DVD. They were great, innocent fun.
shareHi, they are on DVD I'm currently Ask a policeman on DVD from Love Film online DVD rental, It's great I remember watching these Will Hay classic's when I was a child on Bank holidays & Christmas time.

Hay was a great performer though, with Herbert, I would say his films with Marriott and Moffat were just superlative. If you ever see 'Where's That Fire?' on TV, catch it - our bungling trio led by Captain Viking (Hay) run a small, run-down fire brigade. When they install a new fireman's pole...blimey - what a mess!

How right you are. This film is an utterly innocent pleasure and a joy to watch. But sadly asking this question to day means, as the post man would say "You're wasting your time!!!" We live in a horrible and cynical world now.
shareI can remember watching Will Hay with my Grandad (he was a big fan)when I was young (now 40-ish!). I guess it rubbed off on me as I also love the old Will Hay movies.
Oh Mr Porter is THE best of them all. Pure genius.
As a film maker myself, I would really like to make films like this all the time. Especially as this was on e of my favourite films growing up.
Unfortunately, people just aren't interested in this form of comedy anymore, however, I am currently working on a traditional ghost story with many of these elements.
If it goes well, then there will be more to come.
Let's face it - it won't be anywhere near as good as Oh mr Porter, a true classic.
