Request for news or rumours of newer version on DVD

Lost Horizon fanatics (of which I am probably the most certifiable) will have noticed that Columbia fairly recently stripped the commentary and extras from their brilliant DVD version and made the restored movie (alone) over to various Australasian licensees who have been offering it, much discounted, in places like Ebay. I offer the thesis that Columbia would probably only have parted with this property if they were planning a new, more complete and possibly digitised edition in the forseeable future. Does anyone out there have any inkling as to whether such a theory might be valid? Presumeably this could not be officially confirmed due to commercial considerations.

Dear houchin-1: I was fascinated by your speculation but don't know anything about it. If you learn something definite, please post that news. I undertake to do the same. Like you, I love the film - and novel - "Lost Horizon." Did you know that there is a Hilton Society in Britain? They have a website (jameshiltonsociety.co.uk)and produce two publications. Best wishes, DM L-S in New Zealand.

reply

Dear DM L-S,
Yes, I did know of the Society -unfortunately they meet a long way from me (in the Westcountry) -Cambridge and London, I think. Also, and as one might expect, their interests appear to be mainly literary and general, whereas my own tend to centre on this specific title and film, though, of course I admire the novel. I did contact one of their people some time ago when I spotted a US auction house offering Hilton's own annotated copy of the filmscript, but as they were expecting $10,000+ for it no doubt nothing was done, although the website did give considerable information and illustrations, hence my referral.

The particular fascination of a new version of LH, is, of course, the possible reappearance of the 'lost' sections (plus, of course, any further out-takes that may show up). This raises what I call the 'English Paradox' about this masterpiece, i.e. how was it that a full-length soundtrack suvived over here, but only severely edited footage. Clearly they must have been separated at an early stage -but it does seem odd!

My most cherished hope for a recovery of the complete picture rests on the faint possibility that a copy may ultimately surface in one of the former 'iron-curtain' countries: LH was suppressed by the Nazi's, so why not the Communists? Presumably there would have been time between 1937-39 for it to have been distributed in places like Poland, Czechoslovakia, Rumania, etc. -I know it reached Denmark, as I have a programme from there!
Many thanks and best wishes, Peter H.

I contacted Ebay regarding these so-called legitimate DVD release versions of Lost Horizon that are now flooding the market: if they are missing the commentary track and the other value-added extras (including my photo-documentary) they are bootlegs. I never received a reply from Ebay. Sony Pictures is not to blame. I'm referring to the Korean/Chinese language versions. Is the Australasian licensee comment in reference to the versions of which I speak? Currently, I'm working on the companion book to my DVD documentary. At present, there's nothing in the works regarding an upgraded DVD version...

I'll be saving my $$$ to purchase the real thing, because I very much enjoyed your historical narrative when I rented the DVD from blockbuster. I'm also looking forward to reading your book when it comes out, hopefully soon! :)

reply

Dear Mr. Miller -A pleasure to hear from you, and to know your book is in the offing: you might alert us on this board when it is published (I hope also in the UK!).
I confess to buying a stack of the cheap Korean issues, so I could hand them out like bibles! Having watched this version very carefully I am convinced that this is the identical 98/99 print without the extras (except the so-called 'trailer'). As it appeared so widely in Korea, Australia, ?China, etc., I assumed it was a legal, licenced issue, and the oddity of stripping away the commentary, etc. persuaded me that the actual print of the film was probably considered obsolecent in the light of a later restoration -hence my original remarks.
Very many thanks for your researches and excellent photo documentary, and of course much gratitude to Bob Gitt for his magnificent efforts over so many years. Sincerely, Peter H.

Great movie. I just bought the DVD and really enjoyed your informative documentary. Every DVD should have a concise, detailed historical feature of this quality, since it really adds to the experience. Especially in regards to a movie that had so many strange incidents and good stories behind it.

Too bad there's no newer version coming out, although I'm not complaining about the current one. The only way I'd buy another one is if they somehow had new technology to make the picture look significantly better. Or of course if they somehow found that missing footage. Other than these pipe dreams, the current version is plenty good enough.
