The High Lama

How could he be both a priest and a lama? His philosophy and the philosophy
of the whole movie was very Buddhist. But he talks about the Christan ethic.

The Lama probably realizes that the person he's talking to can speak about religion from the prospective of a Christian-based faith. And, because the typical Lama is a very learned person, the Lama would know enough about the basics of other religions to be able to discuss them in comparison to their own belief system.

Don't spit on me.

Thank you for your reply. The Lama was a Roman Catholic priest. Presumably
French. He adapted the role of Lama when he came to Shangrila. I wondered
why a priest would take on this identity.

Father Perrault in the movie was originally from Belgium. When he came to Shangri-La, it may have already had a Buddhist society based on having a High Lama. In time, Father Perrault became High Lama, a person of respect and wisdom. It's all speculation anyway, James Hilton, who wrote the novel, is long dead.

In those days only christians or a christian world was good enough for american or western audiences.

reply

I agree with you. There was a lot of prejudice against anyone who wasn't white,
male, or Christian at that time.

But women were plentiful on the silver screen at the time and continue to be.
