Could it be he had his doubts when he found someone actually wanted to leave? ...And why did Maria want to leave? What was bugging her? Maybe she wanted to be with George really bad? Bob was willing to let his brother go alone ... but it seem the woman changed his mind. That is why I wonder did he have doubt about the place? Did he think they lied to him?
yeh, I think you got all the reasons right there in your post- same way I saw it
I wondered what was bugging Maria too and didn't she know she would turn into a 65 year old if she left?
I think they needed to put her down in the valley to get to work with all the rest of the natives- why did she get to live in the castle and apparently not have to lift a finger along with the other girl?
Good question ...what was bugging Maria ... I don't understand why she wanted to leave ...she must have known she would age once she left ... maybe she didn't believe she would? Yeah ... it had to be the fact that Maria wanted to leave that changed Conway's mind.
I always felt that Shangri La only had its real effect on the good in people and that people who were primarily selfish or who could not interpret the good in it, had a fear of Shangri La. Why did George want to leave? Surely he had the same response to Shangri La as Maria did.
Good point ... it's obvious Maria had the same opinion about Shangri La as George ... I guess she was as unhappy there as George was. Both seem to be on the selfish fearful side ...
Although it was clear that Conway wanted to stay due to his fascination with the place i feel that his little brother leaving and with a young lady too offered him the excuse he needed to be the gentleman of society and take care of the two of them and to leave and go back to the world he knew, because like all humans he was scared of change and committing to a new life in Shangri La which would have been an uncertainty unlike his diplomatic career and life back home in the 'real' world. I also believe that this undertaking was his final test for himself, if he could get them back to civilization and still desired to return that journey would prove himself worthy of the trust and responsibility of taking over the guardianship of the valley the high priest offered him.
I really think he left because the woman wasn't happy at Shangri La and that gave him doubts about what he had been told, and that's why he left ... he had plan to stay even though his brother was going to leave ... but when he talked to the woman ... that's when he changed his mind.
