Still shots 43 minutes into the movie

43 minutes into the movie, there was a dialogue between the Lama and the woman airplane passenger using only still photographs with dialogue in the background. What's the point of this? Was the original reel damaged perhaps?

reply

Not the "lama"- Chang. There were also more parts with the stills instead of moving pictures

You are correct. The master reel had deteriorated to the point it could not be restored, and they could not locate any duplicate either. They were lucky they could find the audio track!

How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

Correct with the film's deterioration. This insert is stated in the message section before the start of the movie, on my copy. Same with the stills conversation between Conroy with his first meeting with Father Pera. This was due to the governments request to delete a peace message in the looming shadows of WW2. Then, movies traveled for quite a while between cities for viewing. If popular, the movie may be enroute for years until seen throughout the country. According to Jane Wyatt, the government wanted young men to think "bang, bang, bang" not peace.
