Yeah it bothered me a bit but it was also a point to it. Notice Conways dialog after they have saved the "white people". It's too point out the racism in the world I suppose.

that had me worried for a bit too, however they expose that quite well in the following dialogue.

As late as the 1970s many white conservatives thought it a compliment to say to a
black man "You're a white man!"

reply

I don't know how old you are, but that's about as ignorant a statement about the '70s that I have ever heard.

No one, at any time, thought that was a compliment.

reply

You might be thinking of, "That's very white of you," which was said more like in the '30s and '40s. I remember being told as a kid in the '60s that it wasnt referring to race, but I always suspected it was.

reply

It's of its time.

It's not "sci-fi", it's SF!

reply

Okay. Change it to "to save 80 people." Which people? What people? "80 white people" makes it clear that they were there to save 80 non-indigenous people. Why do people complain about racism and sexism and words, phrases, and attitudes that were commonplace 80 years ago just because they are no longer politically correct today rather than accepting something as a product of its own time? I think everyone is missing the point. By white people they mean foreigners. Whenever there is a revolution the foreign powers try to rescue their citizens caught up in the fighting. That still happens, there is nothing racist about it.

I know, liberals will drive you crazy on this subject.

"liberals will drive you crazy on this subject. "

Funny, all of the American right wing, whether Republicans, Democrats, Neo-Cons etc is neo-Liberal, and obsessed with letting big business take over everything.

Let's not kid ourselves and think we have come so much further today. During the genocide in Rwanda not 20 years ago, the politically correct UN pulled out all whites and let the blacks get on with murdering one another.

And Conways remorse at being forced to leave the indigenous thousands behind rings just as true today.

reply

Agree. Another good point would be there's a good chance they would be killed BECAUSE they were white.

reply

White people primarily the Imperialist British were scattered all over the world. This was before the independence of India, before world war II and Britain was the super power back then. There was no civil rights movement for the Blacks, Jews and Indians and the minorities were considered as second class citizens. Which is why white people context in the movie is relevant for the time.

reply

It was a different time. They might just as well have said Western as white.
