The primary Shangri La exterior - I'm talking about the white, modernish structure surrounded by terraces and gardens - does anyone know whether that was specially built for the film, i.e. a set, or whether they used some actual location? I did check filming locations and there's nothing detailed enough to tell on the IMDB page so hoping some student of the film might know.

Yes, the white modernish structure was built especially for Lost Horizon, and it was widely criticized at the time of the film's release for being unattractive, even downright ugly. The years have been kind to this film, methinks, and it's way more visually impressive today than it was back in the day; IMHO, that is.
