What is the deal with Maria?
She swore that she didn't lie, and that she had no reason to lie. So why did she? That was the only thing in this brilliant and beautiful movie that I didn't get.

shareShe wanted out -- just like Coleman's brother. I guess for some it wasn't paradise. M
shareSince the High Lama said if there were two men who desired one woman, the one who 'desired her the most' was the winner! Maybe Maria was getting weary of being passed around like a prize pony, of which I am sure the pony also found itself a new home until it was old and feeble.
shareAs far as I'm concerned, Maria was insane. She denied the reality of her age, not only to George, but to herself.
shareI agree with robert3750: Maria is insane. Living in Shangri-La does not help everyone. I have the same impression of the Chinese character in the novel, Lo-Tsen, on whom the character Maria is based.
