Frank Capra On Dick Cavett

Saw Frank Capra on The Dick Cavett Show he was on with Mel Brookes, Peter Bogdanovich, and Larry Gelbart. The Decade channel shows Cavett daily.

Frank Capra told the story behind Lost Horizon. He said everyone loved the uncut version at the studio and they decided to screen it. He said people laughed walked out 10 min in. He was so upset he walked in the rain for the rest of 3 hr runtime. He then said he took the first three reels and threw them in the fire he made it sound literal describing the flames. He said he put the intro in and that's the film we have today. Maybe it was edited again for restoration but thought I'd share the very interesting interview.

The Dick Cavett Show was before my time but what a great show.

I saw the same interview. Afterward, I looked up the movie on Wikipedia, which says that Capra's claim about burning the film was disputed by one of his editors, since "setting the nitrate film on fire would have created a devastating explosion."
