Several glaring mistakes in the subtitles

At 25:15, Molly is telling Mr. Bullock that there is a hansom cab driver waiting in the kitchen. "Hansom cab driver" is displayed in subtitles as "handsome cab driver." Since the issue at hand was the hansom cab's missing horse (which is what a hansom cab uses for propulsion), I'm sure Molly was neither concerned with, nor referring to, a "handsome" cab driver.

At 29:00, Carlo is speaking in Russian to Mrs. Bullock (he says "Moya dorogaiya" which is Russian for "My dear", but the subtitle reads "speaking Italian"). Same thing later in the movie when Carlo is singing an old Russian song, "Ochi Chorniye" (a song many of you may be familiar with, known as "Dark Eyes" in English). Although Carlo's foreign origin was never identified, it was clear to me that his language was Russian, not Italian. Although the name Carlo is certainly more identified with Italians than Russians, it is not exclusive to Italians.

At 1:04:37, when the police enter Godfrey's room in search of the missing pearl necklace, he comes out of his drunken slumber and says, "Come in." The subtitle reads "Welcome, men."


There were some other errors and inconsistencies in the subtitles throughout the movie. I was surprised, because I had expected that a Criterion Collection effort would tend to preclude even minor errors such as these. Who knows, maybe they were deliberate errors?

Still loved the movie, though.
