Did Cornelia also like Godfrey

I kept getting the feeling that she would approach him and try to get him to like her but when he told her the truth she would get insulted. It was like no matter how many times she was bitten she would go back and try again.

I thought that Cornelia would end up with Godfrey in the end! They traditionally hinted her combative liking for him throughout the whole movie which would usually end in a romance in movies such as these. Even the scene where she was supposed to meet him to discuss his secrets but Irene didn't want him to meet her sister because of her jealousy towards Cornelia, I'm sure that scene was written to further advance the Cornelia-Godfrey romance but for some reason I felt the big conversation scene was eventually written out. Because it was clear that she knew he was a Parke. Also the moment he gave Mr Bullock his stocks and explained himself to her, I was sure she totally fell for him then. But then out of left field, they continued the whole Irene-Godfrey fiasco? That was unexpected quite frankly! I'm guessing there were re-writes of the script. Somebody changed their mind and decided to go the Irene way. Too bad. Ended up being annoying!! Still, good movie except for that last bit.

Yeah, I totally thought Cornelia was the one who'd end up with Godfrey! And I was soo disappointed he ended up with Irene - she was such a self-centered drama queen, while Cornelia was much better at reading people - and playing them. She had a much better idea than Irene of who, and what, Godfrey was, already from the start. I think Godfrey and Cornelia would have made a wonderful couple - their domestic arguments would have been delightful to listen in on, I'm sure! Downright Shakespearian, Petruchio and un-tamed Kate style!

And I'm quite convinced being married to scatterbrain Irene would drive me nuts much quicker than being married to Cornelia would! :-)

Except Carole Lombard was the star, not Gail Patrick. But I heartily agree-Cornelia was the better match for Godfrey, but they would have had to switch the actresses around for it to work.

being that it is a Screwball Comedy,I think the ending is left up to the viewer to make up their own ending since we don't continue on with the marriage..Hard to believe such a one sided rush job would carry out!...Cornelia is the better choice for marriage, but I got the idea at one point that perhaps Godfrey might be the kind that dosen't go for women,if you know what I mean..But as much as I love Carol/Irene,I can't imagine being wed to that!..no NO NO!..HELP! ..lol

Completely agree with what you said.

Yes!!! She was jealous of Irene's liking Godfrey from the get-go.

It seems to me that those are two very different things.

Being jealous over Irene having someone and actually truly liking that person, I mean.

My impression was that Cornelia was simply accustomed to always being the dominant sister. She couldn't stand losing to Irene, and she couldn't stand the idea that Irene could have something .... or someone ...... that she couldn't have. My impression was that Cornelia did not care for Godfrey for being Godfrey at all, but rather only as something that she couldn't let Irene "win" at her expense. Her repeated runs at Godfrey weren't because she couldn't help but return to him; rather because she was bound and determined to "win" against Irene.

I love Gail Patrick in this movie (and pretty much everything else that I've seen her in). However, I don't think that *Cornelia* came to like, respect, and care for Godfrey until the very end of the movie just before she admits to planting the necklace.
