Cornelia and Irene are teenagers!?

To wit: At the beginning of the movie, in the hotel when a man says to Mr. Bullock, "Get a load of the dizzy dame". Mr Bullock says "...I've had to for the past 20 years. That's Mrs. Bullock." TWENTY! I always wished the writers had changed that to 30 years.

"I told you a million times not to talk to me when I'm doing my lashes"!

uuuuummmm, you know, i think that you have a very good point, a point that i had not considered, yet if i may suggest, please.

30 years would put them in their late twenties. i could not agree.

but what about 25 years???? that would put them at maybe 24 and 22, perhaps just right in some ways.

plus, eugene palette's voice, frogging out the number 'twenty-five', would be great.

thank you for bringing up an interesting point about a fascinating movie.

do you know that according to W.C. Fields biography, this movie was improvised day-to-day? there was no finished script at the begining of filming, according to the biography.

be well.

Well, Carole Lombard and Gail Patrick were only in their twenties when the movie was made and movie stars often play roles a decade or so younger than their actual age so it's not that big of a deal. The line does stick out though because it "dates" the cast which is usually a movie no-no.

That would mean that, probably, Cornelia was 20 and Irene 18. Irene does come across as really young. Hey, maybe the parents Had to get married! That would explain a lot... the first daughter born the first year of marriage, maybe conveniently premature, and the second two years later.

The actresses seem older than that, but you have to remember that in the 30s girls tried to look older and sophisticated; it wasn't until the 50s that teenagers really had their own look.

So it works, but barely... Powell looks older than someone in his late 20s, though...

reply

Powell was in his forties I believe when this movie was made - and as I understand it, his character is meant to be around that age too...otherwise I doubt the role would work as well as it does...

reply

Yes, he was supposed to be in his forties. At one point Cornelia makes fun of Irene for chasing after a middle-aged man.

a man says to Mr. Bullock, "Get a load of the dizzy dame". Mr Bullock says "...I've had to for the past 20 years. That's Mrs. Bullock."

Of course, it possible that he meant:

It has been 20 years that he has felt like he has felt like he has had to, after the first several years of their marriage had not felt like that kind of an obligation / chore.

Or .....

It has been 20 years that he has considered her a "dizzy dame", after having been blinded to that by relatively fresh romance for the first part of their marriage.

Yeah, possibly a bit of a stretch, but not completely outside the realm of possibilities of what he might have been thinking when he said that line.

reply

i think he shoud have said 22 and 1/2 years.

reply

24 years, 7 months, 169 days, 14 hours, 33 minutes, and 42 seconds.
