NEW DVD VERSION...

I own the cheapy DVD version that is the same quality as VHS. It's not so bad, I guess. But the new Criterion Collection version of My Man Godfrey has come out and I wanted to know if anyone has seen this version and whether it's worth buy it at $29.99. I think I got my current DVD for like $4.99. But if the quality is that much better, I would probably consider getting the Criterion version.

...about the 'outtakes'. How much of it is there, and is it any good? That's be my main reason for buying the Criterion. Hopefully someone who owns it can answer both our questions.

And while I'm here, does anyone know which DVD of "Nothing Sacred" is the best? I don't want to buy something only to learn it's no better than my VHS.

Not to reply to an four-month-old post, but ....

The quality is SUBSTANTIALLY better in the Criterion version. The restoration isn't perfect, of course, but Criterion generally works miracles of varying degrees depending on what they have to work with, and this one is astonishing considering it's a 70-year-old print. It's also a MUCH better transfer and encode than most of the "budget" discs you'll find (I owned two of those prior to picking up the Criterion edition). It looks especially nice with a good progressive-scan rig, although the added quality wouldn't be lost on a standard 480i television, either.

I wouldn't exactly say the outtakes add that much value, unless you receive a lot of enjoyment out of listening to Golden Age cinema actors swear a lot (and many do, mind you). The quality is poor, and there's really only about a minute of footage to be had.

One of the great gems on the Criterion disc is the inclusion of the COMPLETE Lux Radio adaptation of My Man Godfrey, starring many of the original cast including Powell and Lombard. It's not full of any great surprises having seen the film, but it's a charming hour-long radio play for radio nuts like me.

It's certainly understandable to balk at the inflated price of most Criterion releases, but for die-hard fans of the films they cover, they're usually well worth every cent. This one's no exception, and it really gets the treatment it deserves.

Oh I definitely enjoyed hearing it, lol. Especially since Lombard's famouos for it, and I'm a huge fan. But you're right - it's very short and of poor quiality - I think I played that minute of footage like three times to get what she was saying.

I still haven't listened to the radio play though.

I have owned cheap version and now have the Criterion Version... There is no comparison... Criterion quaility is super... The better video quaility alone would be worth it alone... Get this version if you love this film.

I agree with the rest...there's no comparing the cheaper versions with the Criterion version. The quality is amazing, plus the extras are pretty good (I loved the outtakes, but wished there were more...yeah, I'm greedy. lol) I also liked the radio broadcast as well.

No, I didn't. I buy used whenever possible. I got it from Ebay (and in GREAT condition) for something like $5.50.

Deepdiscount.com recently had a "Buy 1 Criterion title and get a second free." They may do it again.

Thank you so much. I realize this is an older thread, but it answered my question perfectly. I was about to buy the cheapie version. I'll wait for sales!

If the quality is much better, it would almost be worth it just to see Lombard's dress after the shower scene.
