Eugene Pallette vs. Mischa Auer

Not to take anything away from Mischa Auer's amusing performance as the eccentric artist who is Mrs. Bullock's protege, but how on earth did the Academy Awards people choose Auer in his rather small part to nominate for Best Supporting Actor and ignore the hilarious Eugene Pallette as the exasperated Mr. Bullock? Auer has only a funny bit or two but Pallette has countless great lines (many of the movies' funniest) and I think he deserved the award to say nothing of a nomination!!! I wonder if some of the Academy members had confused the two since neither were actually stars in the era although Pallette had been around since silent days.

Some people find Auer irritating (see the Poor Carlo thread) but I think he's quite good and I don't deny him his nomination but Pallette is so wonderful in this film I just can't understand how he was ignored by the Academy.

The Academy was clearly confused that year. Eugene Pallette should have been nominated, as well as Gail Patrick for Supporting Actress along side Alice Brady. Also no Best Picture nomination? While Libeled Lady got a nomination but none for acting. Just doesn't make sense to me.

No matter how badly my day is going, watching any scene with Eugene Pallette in it will have me on the floor in stitches. He was brilliant in his comedic delivery.
