Merrily We Live

Does anybody else see the similarities between this and Merrily We Live with Brian Aherne? The whole ditzy rich folk hiring "bum" to work as butler, rich daughter falls in love with him, "bum" turns out not to be a bum after all...?

Obviously this one is vastly superior, but I was struck by the resemblance in plots after seeing both movies.

Yes, there is a similarity to those two films. I think it is funny that rich people have been fascinated by "bums" for so long....now, it has come pretty much to an apex, with all the dumb reality shows about rich people/hillbillies that are so popular now. I suppose one could say that the series The Beverly Hillbillies falls into that same interest group, but at least it was funny.

This film is written so funny and the players are all perfect for their roles, especially the father and Carlo. I love them all, even though they are all crazy.

Maybe, really, there is an equal fascination between rich and poor, still.
It will probably always be of interest to see how "the other side" lives...

I watched Merrily We Live on TCM last night; part of the commentary was that the popularity of My Man Godfrey spawned several movies that had, essentially, the same plot, and even some of the same actors (i.e. Alan Mawbry).
