I found Fran's trying to pass herself off as 35 on her birthday, when she was probably playing someone closer to the actress' real age of 44, so pathetic. And Mary Astor's character was so diplomatic, saying that "she was certain that FRAN would look as good as she does once she reached her age.
LOL! Once of my all-time favorite lines! Yes, the Fran character is indeed supposed to be in her early 40s....certainly not 35, as she insisted. You get an early glimpse of her insane vanity at the beginning when she tell her husband, "Nobody takes me for over 32.....30, even!" Oh, please! She also said she could dance better and longer than her 19-year-old daughter. Wow... Ruth Chatterton played "Fran" to the hilt, to be hated and ridiculed at the end, and so she was. Excellent movie!
Yes, I've been watching this movie every night for the past few nights. I just love it, even though I can't stand the character of Fran Dodsworth...hate her.
Walter Huston is simply so charming....I just love him. And, I love the theme music, as well as the ending!!!:)
Fran definitely wanted to be "forever young". Some then or now cannot face midlife. Look how she reacted to being a grandmother. The party of youth comes to an end.
