Which is the better DVD edition?

I've noticed that there are two recent "special editions" of this film on video. Both are from Synapse Video, according to Amazon.com. One, with a red swastika on a black background on the cover, says:

DVD Release Date: April 17, 2001

The other, with a soldier's face and a Gothic-lettered title, says:

DVD Release Date: March 28, 2006

Are there any visual or sound improvements in the more recent version, or extra features? Or is the the same DVD, just with updated packaging?

Note new release March 03 2008 from Demand DVD studio. Runtime 228 mins - most likely that figure includes a lot of extras.
Check Amazon.co.uk. for synopsis; no reviews at date of posting, no mention of restoration, quality, etc.
