I have seen this movie before but the one thing that struck me when I watched it last night was the fact that practically everyone in the movie is shown smoking cigarettes. I almost expected little Nova to light one up! What a dramatic difference to today's movies where a character who smokes is such an anomaly.

shareLouis Bernard even exhales his smoke directly in young Betty's face in the opening scene. Unfortunatley, smoking was long seen as being appealing and sexy. Doctors even prescribed it for their patients!
shareIn that scene both characters were blowing smoke into Betty's face, I was waiting for her to flinch or step away!
In another scene Lorre offers Banks some cigarettes, and Banks says,
"Are these poison?"
My immediate thought was -- these days they are! lol
It reminds me of the film "Now, Voyager" starring Bette Davis. There was a lot of cigarette smoking in that film too.
