I have seen this movie before but the one thing that struck me when I watched it last night was the fact that practically everyone in the movie is shown smoking cigarettes. I almost expected little Nova to light one up! What a dramatic difference to today's movies where a character who smokes is such an anomaly.
Louis Bernard even exhales his smoke directly in young Betty's face in the opening scene. Unfortunatley, smoking was long seen as being appealing and sexy. Doctors even prescribed it for their patients!
Yes I was waiting for her to flinch, but I think in those days people were so used to cigarette smoke being around them that they just didn't notice it.
