Thanks! I just ordered Alice in Wonderland 1933 and can't wait to see it again!

did you get your dvd and is it a good quality. i have been looking all over for this movie.

reply

I am so glad I found this site. I have been searching for this movie for a while. I remember watching it when I was a child. I hope this is the same one because I'd love toshare with my children.

I'm afraid the copy from Forgotten films isn't DVD quality and looks not to be NTSC for that matter. Still, better than nothing until someone re-masters and re-issues. With all the stars of that era I can't believe no one has touched this.

reply

TCM ran it in June 2001.

It was available on video from a company out of Salt Lake City for a while, I got it back in 1999 but the company seems to be gone now.

was Gary cooper in this movie?
was a trivia question i had

I must be bored ...

reply

yes, Gary Cooper played the white knight that kept falling off his horse.

the copy I got (from Forgotten films) was pretty lousy.
I was hoping for at least vhs quality on DVD but it looked like a 3rd generation copy (vhs of a vhs of a vhs) with lots of smear-y video and barely intelligible sound. Disappointing.

Forgotten films has just upgraded their offering of this title with a transfer from a 16mm film print. I've just placed an order for it. The regular price has been raised to $20. But they're offering the upgraded version for $10 to newsletter members this week (from a newsletter dated July 25, 2006). The specially priced upgraded version is available here:

I got my Forgotten Films DVD this week of the 1933 version of ALICE.
(Nice web site. They got a nice selection.)

Granted, the quality is not 2006 quality:
• There was no clean-up done.
• Scratches on the film are visible.
• Audio wow-and-flutter is audible.

Do not compare a live-action ALICE to an animated-cartoon ALICE.

Likewise, color vs. black-and-white is not a fair comparison.

BUT!

The good news is, the scenes and characters are indeed better than many "modern" color versions.

The fact that the characters actually look like the John Tenniel drawings makes this film better, as far as a viewing experience goes.

And as for the cast, well, this version might be said to be the highest calibre Hollywood has ever offered for any version of ALICE:
• CARY GRANT, crying and singing as the Mock Turtle.
• W. C. FIELDS, as smarty-pants Humpty Dumpty.
• GARY COOPER, as the (bald, mustached) White Knight.
• EDWARD EVERETT HORTON, (singing) as the Mad Hatter.

The look of TWEEDLE DUM & TWEEDLE DEE was matching.
(Why do other versions of ALICE fail to have matching faces of T.Dum & T.Dee?)

The ugly DUCHESS was truly ugly, in the best John Tenniel sense.

The 1933 version is a mix of both books ("Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass And What Alice Saw There").
That means that we get to see all the "queens":
• White Queen (bimbo)
• Red Queen (proper and precise)
• Queen of Hearts (short-tempered)

In closing.
If you are looking for GCI quality graphics, look elsewhere.
But if you appreciate the look of the original Lewis Carroll/John Tenniel illustrations, then this film has an edge over all the other ALICEs out there.

The forgottenfilms transfer from 16mm film was initially missing the scenes with W.C. Fields as Humpty Dumpty and Gary Cooper as the White Knight, but these have been added from their previous offering I believe. There's a lot of audio clipping in those scenes. The film part is rather dark and grainy.

There's also a version available on DVD for purchase or rental from classicflix.com (now called silverscreenarchive.com). It's a little low on bitrate - only takes up half a DVD5, but it seems to be as good a copy as the one uploaded to youtube by another poster in another thread on this board.

I just watched this movie (got it for christmas, thank you dad!) and the quality is EXCELLENT. Especially considering is has never been offically released on video. The only thing I am disappointed in is the thirteen minutes cut out (as stated in the trivia. 90 down to 77 minutes...wonder what was left out?) Anyway, my dad said he bought it off of eBay, maybe thats better quality than the forgotten films version? I've never seen the FF one so I can't compare, all I know is this one is very good. Sure its a bit scratchy in some bits, but I think that is to be expected in such a situation (seventy three year old movie never before released). Anyway, good luck finding a satisfactory copy and happy viewing!

Oh yes, and I also noticed how much Charlotte Henry ( I think that's her name) looks like the original drawings of alice!! I have a tattoo of the original Tenniel drawing (when she is drinking from the bottle in the beginning) and the resemblance is amazing!

Universal will be releasing this 1933 film on DVD on 3/2/2010. On the same day BBC/Warner will release a 1966 version of the same title. No doubt these are to tie in with the new Tim Burton version coming to theaters on 3/5/2010.

Don't bother with that as Universal is finally releasing it on a pristine dvd. No more crappy homemade discs!
