An older Gaston Monescu in Eyes Wide Shut?
The character of Gaston Monescu reminded me very strongly of the character of Sandor Szavost in Eyes Wide Shut. It was like if Monescu had remained the slick player of women he was, and continued going to parties for the rest of his life. At Zieglers party in Eyes Wide Shut he was a tired old man, still charming, but more desperate.
I wonder if Kubrick had seen Trouble in Paradise? The humour is right up his alley. I don't find it impossible that he has seen it, considering his vast knowledge of film. The character of Sandor Szavost was even Hungarian, perhaps a nod to the Trouble in Paradise playwriter Aladar Laszlo. So, what say you?
