Wavishing Kay Fwancis

I listened to Peter Bogdonovich's commentary in which he says Kay Francis had problems with her R's. Listen for it, it is hilarious. NO wonder film crews called her the Wavishing Kay Fwancis. God was she glamorous though......

You should see her in One Way Passage opposite William Powell.....wow....

Given her lewd reputation it seems odd that ms Francis would participate in a film declaring her disinclination w/regard to what was known to be her favorite mode of "transport" shall we say.

She did a movie with Claude Raines. Now THAT I'd like to hear! He had the same problem.

reply

To hear it told, you'd think she was the long-lost sister of Elmer Fudd! LOL Actually, it wasn't all that bad; you knew what she was saying.

reply

I caught her speech impediment a couple times in the film, but not to the point of distraction. Obviously it didn't hurt her career too badly...or did it, I wonder? Anyway...I thought Kay Francis was great in this film...very glamorous and even prettier than Miriam Hopkins.

reply

The only time I found it distracting was when she spoke of "wobbewy." That one laid me out flat. For the life of me, I can't imagine why she or the script writers or Lubitsch or somebody didn't think to substitute "theft" or some other word, even.

Is it a coincidence that both she and Elmer Fudd came out of Warner Brothers?

They did seem to sort of go out of their way to give her words with "r" in them! I was especially amused by her pronunciation of "secatwee" and "wobbwee" But she's so ravishing and sophisticated, its easily forgiven. I also don't believe I've ever seen Marshall and Hopkins be more attractive and sexy than they are here. The only negative thing I can say is that Hopkins hopefully never had to recite foreign dialogue as she did here - to my admittedly non-expert ears, she sounded decidedly nonfluent!

She's delightful in this film. the 'rs' have never bothered me. i also love her in The Goose and the Gander, which is also very funny. her voice is charming.
