Cabbages planted as ornamental plants are pretty common now.
Every late summer and fall, when they are planted all over around here, I think of Selina admiring them, then being mocked by the farmer spreading the tale of the teacher who thinks "Cabbages is beautiful!"
I was always really annoyed by their ignorance when it came to her comment.
shareI know. What makes her character interesting is that she values, as her father taught her, both practical hard work and beauty, and doesn't see a harsh divide between them. It's a wonderful philosophy.
shareI don't see any reason to be annoyed by them not seeing the beauty that she saw. For them it was hard, back-breaking work and so they weren't able to appreciate the beauty of it, whereas she was looking at it from a spectator's POV.
