Selina was right!

Cabbages planted as ornamental plants are pretty common now.

Every late summer and fall, when they are planted all over around here, I think of Selina admiring them, then being mocked by the farmer spreading the tale of the teacher who thinks "Cabbages is beautiful!"

I was always really annoyed by their ignorance when it came to her comment.

I know. What makes her character interesting is that she values, as her father taught her, both practical hard work and beauty, and doesn't see a harsh divide between them. It's a wonderful philosophy.

I don't see any reason to be annoyed by them not seeing the beauty that she saw. For them it was hard, back-breaking work and so they weren't able to appreciate the beauty of it, whereas she was looking at it from a spectator's POV.
