Before I read that the 'X' symbolism was a reference to the newspapers use of the symbol when they covered stories on gangster's deaths, I thought that the 'X' meant that a character was marked for death. For example when Gaffney is moments from being assassinated, an 'X' marks his bowling score as if fate has marked Gaffney.
Another piece of symbolism I liked was in the film's final scene, when the camera pans from Tony's body to the sign "The World Is Yours". Throughout the film Tony saw this sign as a representation of an oppotunity for a greater life, but by the film's end the audience can view this sign as a moral lesson. To me "The World Is Yours" conveys the message that life is what you make it. Tony made his life revolve around a world of violence and immoral excess, which in the end cost Tony his life.
"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".
