I saw the remake first - I've always loved it. Now I think it's just a very good film; it's over-the-top, and the fascination rappers have with it kills it for me (ha ha), but yes it's a classic in its own right. Do I believe it's as great as most people claim? Hell no. It's regarded as one of the best films from the 1980's --I can agree with that, maybe top 30 -- but in the same league as other "gangster" films such as Goodfellas, The Godfather, Casino, and others? No, I don't think so. Of course your topic isn't about the two films, so when it comes to the performances I'm gonna have to go with Tony Camonte as brilliantly played by Paul Muni. In some ways it's hard to say though, because both performances were their own -- Pacino was over-the-top for the majority of the film, but he still managed to give us one of cinema's most memorable and iconic characters. Still, iconic doesn't necessarily mean "better," right? So with that said I'll pick Tony Camonte over Montana any day. Muni was just ahead of his time -- his performance was naturalistic for its time -- and he stole each scene. And overall his character is the ideal Tony.
