Gay character?

I'm wondering if Roscoe Karns may have been playing a gay character. He gets terribly jealous of the interest George Raft takes in the ladies and is only mollified when told that no matter what happens he and George will always be together. Also it's very noticable the physical contact he has with George Raft in the bathing and dressing sequence even to the extent of letting his hand rest on Raft's behind for a second or two. I don't think there is a gay relationship going on and I think George may be warning him off when saying to Roscoe that as far as flowers for his funeral are concerned, he doesn't want 'any pansies'! I think that Roscoe may be wishing for more than is on offer however! Anyone agree/disagree?

I don´t think there´s a gay thing going on - or were the signals different in the 1930s? It was taken from a short story - have you ever read the book?

vince200002000 - this is a DISCUSSION board! Nobody here has to 'shut up' to appease YOU! I'm a gay man myself and I'm interested in the development of the portrayal of gay characters in film history. I think it's an interesting topic for discussion.

Not only did I think there was something suspect about the relationship between Leo and Joe, I also noticed, about 40 minutes into the film, two woman smoking what appears to be a joint while making eyes at each other. This movie is pre-code so I wouldn't be surprised by the innuendo.

I don't agree with the intrepretation re Leo and Joe, but those two women who share a cigarette in the nightclub montage was definately a bit of suggested lesbianism by the director.

I just watched that show about the kid and then immediately watched the movie which I have on dvd just to see Marty Martyn. I totally believe the kid's story, and yes, it freaked me out! I played Marty Martyn's scene twice!

That's interesting. I had never heard of this before but I have Night After Night on DVD as well. I'm not sure where Marty Martyn is in the film, though.

I know this is an old post and you will never see this, but what part was there two women smoking a joint? I must've missed that. Was it when Mae West and the other woman, who looked like a burly man in drag hungover in bed, and Mae lights up a cigarette? That didn't seem like a pot smoking scene, so I'm guessing that wasn't the scene you are speaking of.
