The chase through the jungle!

Having only recently seen this film, I have to say, I was floored by the sequence in which Rainsford and Eve are pursued through the island by the dogs. It's just a pitch perfect action scene. The scene at the end where Rainsford fights Zaroff and his men back at the mansion is a close second (love when he breaks that guy's back!). Very kinetic and fast-paced.

And I got to say that I love that closeup of Zaroff's bug-eyed, insane expression with gnashed teeth when they're running through the tall grass (just before the waterfall scene). It perfectly hammers home just how singleminded he is, and really shows his utter madness. And when he shoots Rainsford and he (Rainsford) goes over the cliff, that insane little giggle Zaroff does is just great.

They couldn't make that chase scene any better if they tried!!!

Also, for any gun lovers out there, does anyone know what kind of rifle Zaroff uses?

reply

surprised this has not been answered. I'm not a gun lover(or hater) just a movie lover. the rifle was called a savage model 19 with a Lyman 438 field scope on it. his pistol, more obviously, was a Luger P08. there is an IMDB sister page which gives information on firearms used in films. this information was obtained there.

Thank you. I myself submitted the screenshots for that and had my question about the Savage answered some time after my original post here, however. :)

wow, so really you answered your own question vicariously, lol.

Yeah.. and then stupidly forgot to come mention the fact here. XD

reply

yeah but that chase sequence was the only good part about this movie, admit it.

reply

Well, it's just my opinion but I just really enjoyed the whole movie. The plot, McRae and Wray, the "philosophical" debate, the chase/action scene and the finale. Nicely done pre-code movie.

Great chase scene. The close ups the jungle set was incredible.

reply

Agreed. That chase sequence was expertly done.
