I wish you was a wishin' well...
I absolutely love that line. I watched this film for the first time the other day and that line had me in stitches. Very funny.
I also enjoyed the slamming of the grapefruit, comedy gold.

Yeah, I love the cracks in 1930s & 40s movies. They may not have been realistic in showing the gritty side of life, but they definitely had some zingers.
No two persons ever watch the same movie.share
Oh man. I watched this today and I was hysterical with laughter. Cagney's line is hilarious. And slamming the grapefruit in her face was total gold. What a legend.
There you go wishin' stuff again. I wish you was a wishin' well....so that I could tie a bucket to ya and sink ya!
If you listen very closely, you can hear the "smack" when wet grapefruit makes contact w/Mae Clarke's face. And her "Ohhhh," sounds so genuine! I believe she knew it was coming, but didn't quite realize how it'd feel.
A wonderful bit in a good movie!
That moment was an original idea from Cagney himself. And while Clarke was not terribly happy about it, if not for that moment no one would have remembered her career. Cagney parodies himself in his last film, One--Two--Three by picking up a grapefruit and threatening to smash it into the face of his protagonist in that movie, Horst Buchholz.
