The ending

I enjoyed this movie much more than I had anticipated, but there was one thing about it that rubbed me the wrong way.
I think the movie would be even better If it had ended with the words "I ain't so tough" as I thought everything that followed was superfluous and didn't add anything to the story.

I disagree with you. There was redemption in the way his brother Mike came to love his brother again, Ma's preparations for Tommy's return underscored her complete denial of everything Tommy had been doing, it was revealed that the shooting was NOT a set-up by Paddy Ryan--who remained true to Tommy and to his word, and the final knock at the door with Cagney's tied up and mutilated body falling to the floor is one of the most chilling endings in movie history. So I would say there was quite a lot!

Thought they should have ended the second the body hit the floor. It was odd that the last thing we see is the brother walking toward the camera from the waist down. Oh well, it was 1931. They hadn't figured everything out yet.

I wonder- did Mike take up the gun to avenge Tom?

reply

Sorry, don't remember. Been too long. What's your thought? Maybe the next person can chime in.
