This is why I love movies!

"The Smiling Lieutenant" is one of the best, if not THE best romantic comedies ever made. Even though Lubitsch made several topnotch movies in his later career, like: "The Shop Around The Corner" and "To Be or Not to Be", nothing from either him or any other director could match the greatness of his early sound movies. "The Smiling Lieutenant" and "Trouble In Paradise" are movies that I can't live without. And if Criterion hadn't released those two movies... Well the thought just scares me to death!

HERE HERE!! Of all of Lubitsch's films, one of the very few American one's I haven't seen is, believe it or not, Trouble in Paradise. It's just that the Criterion disk is so expensive....though when I have the money, I know it'll be worth buying....

Let's not forget, "One Hour With You." Musically superior, and Chevalier's best performance, IMO. To me, the quintessential Lubitsch.

I'm watching it right now & I'm with you! Well done....

I love it too. And Trouble in Paradise - and of course The Merry Widow AND Love Me Tonight.

reply

Love Me Tonight--really great film but directed by Mamoulian, not Lubitsch.
