Likely the origin was from Gabriel Dell doing the Lugosi imitation on Steve Allen's show. Also Alan Sherman does a similar impression on his song My Son The Vampire from the early 50's.
Kind of like where do zombies eating brains come from? The only movie I've seen where that happens is Return of the Living Dead. Other than that, zombies just eat human flesh in general.
And why do people call the monster Frankenstein and not the scientist? I guess the monster not having a name confused them so they gave a name of their own.
