shareeh.......I saw this movie. Not my favourite but was VERY surprised at how funny it actually was. One of my favourite comedies for sure. Not my favourite of ALL time though.
shareThis is hands down my favorite movie of all time, and my opinion has not wavered in the past 20 years. Often times when you revisit a movie you loved when you were younger your opinion is quite different, but I still love this movie as much today as I did when I first saw it in college. It is pure genius.
shareOnly movie I like better is Pulp Fiction, and that's probably only for sentimental reasons. City Lights is all around superb: I can't think of one flaw in it. No one did it like Chaplin, and no one's done it like him since. I can't imagine anyone else being able to balance the worst and best points in life like he does in all his movies. The scene where the Tramp prevents the stranger from killing himself is so hilarious and yet so touching, and Chaplin does it with total originality and not one bit of manipulative tearjerking. And the end has to be the best in film history.
shareNot number 1, but it has to be in my top five.
Chaplin doesn't get enough respect for being one of the greatest directors of all time. He has some of the most emotional, and touching moments in film history. Not to mention his perfect comedic timing.
I don't a A favorite movie, WAY too hard to decide..... but City Lights would be my favorite Chaplin 'Tramp' movie.
Just too beautiful! That ending makes me cry pretty much every time, when a SILENT flick can have such an impact on you, you know it's good!

Yes my all time favorite too !! Chaplin's best because it has EVERYTHING in there. The final scene is to me the best sequence ever made on film...

Y'know I forget sometimes that genius doesn't have to shake the world down. It can be simple, funny, romantic, down to earth and human. I think this is the most human film ever made. Maybe that's why it's my favorite. It's able to be fanciful and fun as well as profoundly empathetic and moving. It's a real shame more people don't see it.
P.S. Is empathetic a word?.....I can't read or write.....
Yes. It is a masterpiece. It might be the greates film of our time.
shareI always said this was one of my favorite movies, if not my favorite of all time. Hadn't seen it for about 20 years and just saw it again. It definitely ranks as number 1.
shareNot my favorite movie, but in the top 20. The ending is one of the greatest ever filmed, IMHO.
share I just caught this movie the other night on TV and I loved it. Its probably my favorite slient movie. Its not my all time favorite, maybe in the top 20-40....somewhere in there. Its one of the few movies I was actually screaming at my Tv set(I have not done that since the eposide of "Will and Grace" when Will is trying to get Barry Manallo tickets...but thats another story.) I suggest any fan of slient movies to check it out if you have not done so.
I want to know how it feels to care about something passionately.

I bought this movie last weekend, watched it, and absolutely loved it. It's one of my favorite silent comedies. I love these silent films, and Chaplin's were truly the best. As for favorite Chaplin film? City Lights ranks #3 with me, my first and foremost favorite of his is "The Kid," followed by "The Gold Rush," followed by this great film-"City Lights."
