not bad...

...though I expected more. Good, though, and a well-conceived and executed plot, but I don't think it necessarily all cuts together as well as has been advertised.

When I say that I don't feel it cuts together as well as advertised, I mean that while it's certainly a good story, the gag scenes often felt pretty disposable and tacked on, and not organic to the movie. To me, a great movie's scens are all deeply, vitally necessary.

I know what you mean. Just remember the time period and it all seems much more extraordinary. It's the emotional part of the film that gets me thinking Chaplin's a genius much more than the gags.

reply

That's very true. Certainly good gags anyway, though. Altogether, quite an achievement.
