If not for the perfect ending...


would you have liked it nearly as much. I for one would have liked the movie but probably wouldn't have loved it. Everything sort of built toward the ending in such a perfect way and had it ended differently I could understand how people would not have liked it as much. I mean the movie is kind of silly for the most part but maybe that makes the ending all the more powerful because no one really expected it.

You're right. I didn't think it was all that "Great" up until the ending.
Very touching ending. Probably Chaplin's greatest on-screen achievement.
However, I still do think Modern Times is a better film.

I found it to be a clash of tones that was kinda jarring. I did really like the film, so don't take it too harshly. But the comedy is so slapstick, many of the bits had me thinking of old Goofy shorts I loved as a kid. Then, to transition to scenes with the depth and poignancy of the ending, whoa!

Btw, I just watched this, my first Chaplin. Look forward to others.
