Very good
First off, I detest war, however the synopsis for this film felt important to explore.
For a war film released in 1930, this was an exceptional effort. The acting was really good, the battle scenes, explosions, bombardments and even the gruesome deaths at times, really worked.
Seeing the horrors of war displayed in such a raw fashion, with soldiers completely losing it, was very sobering. Too many times people romanticize things, including war. War is only one thing - Death. Yes, there are soldiers that return home, but war always results in so much death, and leaves a permanent mark on those who survived.
What the soldiers also go through with hunger, and longing for female companionship, was also displayed well. A very little upside to war, are the friendships being made, truly brothers in arms, and really sad to see some don't make it.
This film was filmed so incredibly well, that you felt you were there in the thick of the battle scenes. The editing was superb.
There are faults with this film, but for 1930, I will give them a pass.
All in all, it's a truly remarkable effort from all involved, and this film will stay with me for a long time.
