Yes, there was a TV-movie starring Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine in 1979. I saw it before I saw the original and I like them both in different ways. There is also another version that's been announced, but no real information is out on it here. Click on the writer's name on this movie's front page and that will lead you to these other two movies. The 1979 version is well worth seeking out.

I see the 1979 Hallmark Hall of Fame version at Suncoast Video all the time for $8.99. When it was broadcast the local TV critic called it John-Boy goes to war. It really isn't a bad production; I should add it to my collection. A town in Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) was slated to be leveled for a strip mining operation. The government gave them permission to blow it up for the shelling scenes. So, those are real period buildings getting blasted away. BTW, I saw the 1930 version at Big Lots for $3.
