Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame is set to star as the remake. He's a talented young actor and though I have issues with redoing a classic, this was an early talkie and perhaps could be a decent reimagining.
You gotta wonder if movie executives convene regularly with the sole purpose in mind of discussing just which movies they haven't remade yet. Once the options are listed, I surmise they "put it to a vote", and we're graced with yet another uninspired, craptastic "re-imagining." Their ultimate goal is to get enough remakes of classics out there before they daunt on those that are truly unassailable, ala Casablanca, The Godfather, Jaws, etc. They're dangerously close.
Fu_ck Potter and fu_ck every greedy, worthless bastard behind this inevitable hackjob. May they all destroy their bowel capacities with his wand.

I agree with your assessment that there don't seem to be any original ideas in movie production meetings anymore. So far except for a few major missteps like that abortion that was the remake of Psycho, most motion picture executives seem to be content to bring stinky adaptations of lame television shows from the 70s and 80s to the screen. I give thanks that at least they didn't want to cast Seth Rogen - though he might already be in talks for a remake of Gone With the Wind.
As much as I like Daniel Radcliffe as an actor, I think that this is one movie that they shouldn't touch. It's perfect the way it is and doesn't need to be remade. I remember watching this film every year in my history classes. It's a film that should be respected and preserved. If they really want to do something with it, they should just re-release it in theatres so that younger generations will be able to appreciate it in it's original format.
..........The problem with Daniel Radcliffe, in a remake of "All Quite on the Western Front" is, at least for now, is he is too associated with Harry Potter. I can't help to think about how George Reeves was trimmed "From Here to Eternity" after test audiences yelled Superman when ever he appeared on screen. Perhaps if Radcliffe gets to do some small edgy independent stuff audiences might come to see him without thinking of a flying broomstick..........As for a remake we are a few years from the centennial of World War One. There may be some heightened interest in the subject. TAG LINE: True genius is a beautiful thing, but ignorance is ugly to the bone.
..........Some how I doubt most of the audience for a heavy stage production like "Equus" would be fanatic Harry Potter fans. The few who were would be too cultured to yell "It's Harry Potter" or whatever that magic word is I can't think of when Daniel Radcliffe appears on stage. It's probably a good career move.
